NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) FAQs

Q 1: I am in class 10th. Can I give NTSE Exam?

Ans. Yes! The eligibility for NTSE has changed. The student of Class X standard is eligible to take NTSE.


Q 2: From where I can get the NTSE first stage (state level) forms?

Ans. To Apply for the NTSE Examination aspirants have to follow the process given below :

*Use Legal (8.5” X 14”) size paper for taking print.

Instructions for filling up the application form for State Level National Talent Search Examination:

  1. The application form is meant for the students appearing at the State Level NTS examination conducted by each state/UT.
  2. The candidate/ Principal shall submit the form directly to the state/UT liaison officer only.
  3. The candidate/Principal must deposit the application fee, if any, prescribed by state/UTs with application form.
  4. The candidate/Principal should leave the 4-Digit Centre code blank, to be filled by the liaison officer / other authorities.
  5. Note : – Students can enroll themselves for the examination through the school only.

Q 3: What is the syllabus for NTSE Exam?

Ans. NTSE Syllabus: The NCERT has not prescribed any set syllabus for the NTSE. The NTSE is conducted by NCERT for the students who are studying in X standard. The NTSE comprises of two level tests:

A. MAT  (Mental Ability Test)               B. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

Each Test consists of 100 multiple choice type questions. Wherein each question has 4 alternatives marked 1, 2, 3 and 4. The candidate has to select one correct answer from the given alternatives and mark its number in the provided answer sheet. Each correct answer carries one mark each and for each wrong answer or unattempted que. no mark is 


Q 4: How many exams are there in the NTSE?

Ans. First stage (STSE – State Talent Search Examination) is the state level.  After clearing stage -1 selected student are eligible to write Stage- II


Q 5: How many scholarship are given in NTSE?

Ans. 2000


Q 6: Is there any reservation in NTSE scholarship?

Ans. Yes, reservation is available for SC, ST and Physically handicapped students.


Q 7: Where are the examination centers for the first stage?

Ans. It is available in almost all districts of the Indian states.


Q 8: What is my district / center code?

Ans. Usually the center code is mentioned on the application form itself. But if details are not mentioned on the form, you should contact school authorities or the concerned state liaison officer . If form has been collected personally, then contact the concerned person and if downloaded from the website, then call the concerned authority. Few states do have clear information on their website/form.


Q 9: Where my interview would be held?

Ans. Now interviews have been discontinued in NTSE.


Q 10: Is there any state quota in NTSE?

Ans. Yes there is state quota in NTSE Stage-1 . i.e. a selected number of candidates from the state will qualify the first round (STSE). However there is no state quota for the final result.


Q 11: I am in class IX. Can I appear in NTSE?

Ans. Only 10th class studying students can appear in NTSE.  Those students who have appeared in NTSE while studying in class VIII are not eligible to write the exam again.


Q 12: When the result of NTSE Stage- 1 held in November will be declared?

Ans. Normally it takes 2-4 months depending upon the state.


Q 13: Is there any negative marking in NTSE?

Ans. No ! from session 2018, NTSE has discontinued negative marking scheme.


Q 14: What type of questions is there in NTSE Stage -1 exam?

Ans. Objective – Multiple Choice Questions. Single correct questions in the First stage.


Q 15: I don’t know whom to send my NTSE form?

Ans. First Stage: It has to be attested by your school Principal . And normally it is routed through your school only. For Second level, you need not to apply , you will be receiving the admit card from NCERT for the second stage


Q 16: I have not received my admit card for the state level NTSE. What should I do?

Ans. NTSE 1st round admit card is either dispatched or have to be collected personally as per the instruction from you state liaison office.


Q 17: I have cleared 1st Level State Talent Search Examination. How I can apply for National Level Round?

Ans. No need to fill any form for national round. You will receive admit card for the national round from NCERT by April 3rd week or later.


Q 18: Can I request for evaluation / rechecking of my mark sheet?

Ans.  No, the NCERT do not allow for it . However you can get your score by RTI in case you do not receive your score.


Q 19: What is the advantage of clearing NTSE?

Ans. The scholarships under the present scheme are awarded to the candidates for pursuing courses in sciences and social sciences up to doctoral level and in professional courses like medicine and engineering up to second-degree level subject to the fulfillment of the conditions provided in this brochure.

2000 scholarships will be awarded. The students who qualify second stage are eligible for scholarship. The amount of scholarship has been enhanced to Rs.1250 per month for class XI and XII and Rs.2000 per month for students studying under graduate and above.


Q 20: Is there any district quota in NTSE?

Ans.  No, Only State Quota is available.


Q 21: Questions are different in different states in NTSE first stage?

Ans. The number of questions allocated for each subject will be :

Physics 12
Chemistry 11
Biology 12
Mathematics 20
History 10
Geography 10
Pol. Science 10
Economics 5
